NEVADA

Maidee's Restaurant is unrecognizable as a diner from the outside. The diner is actually encased in an exterior structure. When I visited the diner at 3:00 p.m., it was closed. The posted hours on the front door read "Open 4:00 pm to Closing"

I was peeking in the windows as my mother and sister sat in the car waiting. It was freezing that day. I disappeared behind the building as my sister wondered why I didn't get arrested for trespassing more often.

I reappeared with a woman who had caught me peeking. As it turned out, she was the manager.

It was quite a sight. The diner was in great shape, though wood slats had been added to its exterior. The diner itself was now a bar, surrounded by restaurant tables and greenery.

I explained to the woman that I photographed diners. My family watched as the lovely young woman unlocked the door and let me in to take photos.

I did my business, thanked her, and went back to the car.

My sister shook her head, "I don't know how you do it..."

I told them what it looked like and my mom was excited to see it. We decided to drive to Bar Harbor, freeze some more, and return for dinner.

We returned at about 5:00 and were handed our menus. Maidee's is not a diner by any stretch. It is a restaurant, through and through. Diners were well-dressed and entered asking if reservations were necessary that night.

Mom took photos and was interested in the plants taped to the ceiling. Even the bathroom was well-apointed.

The menu was impressive and the prices were quite reasonable. I only wondered if the food would be as pleasurable.

Choices ranged from my pick, Lime Shrimp Vera Cruz, to Chinese specialties and my mom and sisters pick, the Pu-pu platter.

The manager I met came by to welcome me back. The food reached the table quickly and it looked wonderful. Everything was arranged on our plates colorfully and with care.

In this small Maine town, my mom and sis had what they thought was the best Chinese food they've ever had. The pork fried rice came with large chunks of pork and the fried shrimp was encased in tempura.

My lime shrimp was also incredibly tasty. I really was quite surprised at how good the food was.

My only regret was that I had no room for the pecan pie!

Maidee's comes very highly recommended. I would have to say it was probably the best food I've ever had in a diner "building", even if it wasn't an actual greasy spoon.
